Veneers Q & A

Capitol Square Dental

What are Veneers?

Sometimes called dental porcelain laminates or porcelain veneers, these are very thin shells of tooth-colored material which are custom designed to cover the front surface of your teeth to improve their overall appearance. Veneers are bonded to the front of the teeth to enhance their shape, color, size, or length. Dental veneers can be made from resin composite materials or porcelain. Both types of veneers have their advantages. Porcelain veneers better mimic the light reflecting the property of natural teeth and resist stains better. Resin veneers are thinner and require less of the tooth's surface be removed before placement. The office will discuss with you what the best choice of veneer material will be for your needs.

Veneers are most often used for:

  • Teeth which are worn down.
  • Teeth which have been discolored by either excessive fluoride, root canal treatment, stains from tetracycline or other drugs, or large resin fillings.
  • Teeth which are uneven, misaligned, or irregularly shaped.
  • Teeth with gaps between them.

What is the procedure for dental veneers like?

  • Consultation - having a veneer treatment usually requires three visits, beginning with the consultation.
  • Diagnosis and treatment planning - The dentist will ask what results you hope to achieve. During this appointment, your teeth are examined to ensure dental veneers are appropriate for you. The procedure is explained, including the strengths and limitations of veneers. X-rays and an impression of your mouth and teeth may also be made.
  • Preparation - about 1/2 millimeter of enamel is removed from the tooth surface. A local anesthetic is used if desired. An impression or model is made of your tooth and sent to a laboratory to construct the permanent veneer using these precise specifications.
  • Bonding - to prepare your tooth, it is cleaned, polished, and etched or made rough. A special light is used to activate the chemicals in the cement so that it hardens very quickly. Your bite is evaluated and final adjustments are made.
  • Follow up - you may be asked to return so your gums can be checked to see how they are responding to your veneer.
